  Translators" Note:

This on-line bibliography is the result of a translation project carried out by a group of graduate students of Prof. Mark Bender"s Seminar on Chinese Epic Traditions at the Ohio State University from January to March in 2000. The members of the translation team are Max Bohnenkamp, Peace Lee, Lichuan Qu, Eric Shepherd, and Li Yu.

The original Chinese bibliography was published in Zhongguo xiandai minjian wenxuejia cidian [A dictionary of contemporary Chinese folklorists] edited by Zhang Chubei (Haiyan chubanshe 1993). This is by far the most complete bibliography of epics in China.

Due to the oral nature of most of the works included in the bibliography, they had typically undergone a process of recording, collecting, editing, arranging, and sometimes collating before they were crystallized into their final textual form. Therefore, a unique bibliographic style is required to document these works. The translation team has worked out such a bibliographic style:

Title in Pinyin (Explanatory notes in Pinyin) [Title in English (Explanatory notes in English)]. Performed by XXX, translated by XXX, and edited by XXX. Publishing house, year.

The translation team has also worked together to standardize the translation of certain terms found in the Chinese version. Following is a list of such terms:
