Dear Dr Chao,
This is to confirm that I received your message: sorry for this late reaction: I"m travelling until the end of next week, but in order not to be too late, I herewith formulate my good memories of our co-operation and our best wishes for the future of the Institute of Ethnic Literature.
My contacts with the Institute of Ethnic Literature date back to 1999 when Professor Yang Enhong came to the Netherlands where I met her at Leiden University. She invited me to give a talk at The Congress of Tibetologists she was organizing in Leiden. We discussed often about research methodologies and intercultural studies, and she invited me to address the congress she was organising. I was hesitant: I was not a Tibetologist at all, but she insisted and said: "You know things that they do not know about." Finally I agreed and we had greatly stimulating discussions with the scholars who had come from all over the world to attend the congress. At the end Ptrofessor Yang Enhong invited me to come to CASS and visit the Institute of Ethnic Literatures in the exchange programme between the Netherlands Royal Academy and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. We organised several meetings and conferences, and since that first visit I have always come back with great pleasure, giving several talks to PhD students at IEL and meeting with experienced respected older colleagues as well as with very intelligent and eager young students. In co-operation we have accomplished several projects, one of which resulted in the bilingual edition of Epics and Heroes in China"s Minority Cultures. More recently we have been working on China"s creation mythologies, a very exciting and promising project that really merits follow ups in various directions.
I want to thank the Institute for our wonderful co-operation over the years, and I am grateful for what I learned in our precious intercultural exchanges. Thanks to you all, to the IEL, to its dynamic director, and to the very special colleagues I got to know there. I congratulate you all on the festive 30th birthday of the Institute, that great place of cultural riches and learning, and wish you all a great and fulfilling future in research and intercultural co-operation. I see IEL as a friend, and from afar I will drink a good glass of wine to IEL"s well-being now and in the future, remembering the old Chinese proverb that "A thousand drinks with a good friend are not yet enough"!
