Dear Chao Gejin!
Thank you very much for informing me about the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Institute of Ethnic Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on July 21st!
It is a great pleasure for me to congratulate you and the members of the Institute on this occasion for theoutstanding scholarly work done at the Institute of Ethnic Literature over the last thirty years. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to visit the Institute for the first time already in 1985, only five years after its foundation. I remember the lively discussions, the wealth of information I was given, also the books presented to me, and the excellent organization of my stay both in Beijing and in Xinjiang. The same is true of my second visit to the Institute in 1989, which was equally successful and memorable.
My own scholarly career has been greatly influenced by my contacts with various members of the Institute of Ethnic Literature, both during my stays in your Institute and during the research stays of some of the members of the IEL at the University of Bonn. I am very grateful for these contacts and feel that on the scholarly and intellectual, but also on the human level our collaboration has been most fruitful. I am happy to say that we are united not only by the bond of our common research interests, but also by a feeling of friendship and companionship.
