TO THE PARTICIPANTS
We are pleased to invite scholars to the forthcoming Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Forum on "Documentation and Archiving of Endangered Languages and Oral Tradition: Researches and Interdisciplinary Approaches” from 19th to 20th May, 2011 in Beijing.
 
The symposium aims to promote discussions on the major issues mankind has encountered in the maintenance of cultural diversity and sustainable development in an age of globalization. The forum puts emphasis on the communication among different cultural backgrounds and multi-disciplines, and fosters interdisciplinary study with multi-perspectives of cultural heritage research, oral tradition research, information science and communication science, with a basic aim to create better environment to safeguard and preserve the common heritage of humanity. The topics of the forum covers the composition, memorization and transmission of oral literatures, collection, documentation and digitalization of oral traditions, safeguarding endangered languages and construction of folklore archives. The above mentioned academic areas give an indication of the future development trend of related academic fields. This forum has received cooperative efforts of many academic institutions, and active participations of distinguished scholars from home and abroad.
MAIN TOPICS
Scholars from several research fields will be invited to discuss the following topics: Firstly, topics related to professional requirements for collecting, documentation and archiving of oral traditions, including digitization process of folklore materials. Secondly, questions related to digital archive of oral tradition materials, e.g. metadata based project goals; the solution and application of computers and relevant technologies in the process of collection, management, presentation, and access; management of multi-languages and multi-ethnic materials; discussing the necessity of digital folkloristics, and the linkage of folklore theories with computer technologies.
LANGUAGES
The forum will be held in English and Chinese, and we will make all efforts to arrange translation where needed.
VENUE

The forum will take place in the Conference Hall at the headquarter of CASS, which is located in
No.5 Jianguomennei Dajie.

Accommodation will be provided in single rooms in Starway Sunjoy Hotel located on No. 6 Ritan
